In a world that celebrates fleeting achievements—from broken sports records to Academy Awards—we are constantly bombarded with ideas of what a successful, lasting legacy looks like. Yet, as Pastor Luke Barnett shared in this week’s devotional, the truly valuable legacy is not the one recognized by the world, but the one recorded by God.

Worldly accolades, certificates, and trophies are temporary; they tarnish, they fade, and they end up crumpled in a desk drawer. But the Bible points us toward an eternal accounting process that is perfectly just, missing nothing, and seeing everything we do. This contrast highlights a crucial truth: what truly matters in the eyes of eternity is not public recognition, but faithful devotion carried out in secret. The Lord sees it all, and He will reward accordingly.

The Twin Pillars of Eternal Legacy

If we want to leave a legacy that lasts, the message is clear: there are only two foundational ways to build it—through giving and serving.

Why these two actions? Because they are the physical expressions of love.

  1. Loving God and People: The only way to truly love God is by giving to Him and serving Him. Similarly, the way you love other people is by giving to them and serving their needs. Love, at its core, is an action, and you simply cannot love without giving something of yourself.

  2. The Joy of Compulsion: While you can certainly give without loving, when you genuinely love someone, you are compelled to give. There is a deep, intrinsic joy that comes from this selfless act. It’s an overflow of the heart.

You Are the Light of the World

As Jesus Christ told His followers, He was the light of the world, but once He went away, they became the light of the world. And how does the world see that light? It sees it through your hands and feet—as you reach out to serve, as you give, and as you love people.

The service and generosity demonstrated by the Dream City community are not done in vain. We often perform tasks in our daily lives that are fleeting; they must be done again tomorrow, such as shaving your face or doing laundry. But the time, effort, and resources you pour into giving and serving are different. They matter. They contribute to a legacy that Jesus promises you will enjoy for eternity.

This work is about making a lasting difference—a difference that extends beyond this life. It is an act of faithfulness that is deeply admired and eternally rewarded. Believe this truth, live this way, and you will leave a legacy that truly lasts.
