When we picture the followers of Jesus, the twelve disciples often come first to mind. But look closer at the Gospels, and you’ll see a vibrant tapestry woven with the faith, courage, and devotion of women who walked closely with Him. From the very beginning of His ministry to the foot of the cross and the empty tomb, women were not just present; they were pivotal.

Jesus, in a way that radically defied the cultural norms of His time, saw, valued, and empowered women. He spoke directly to them, taught them theological truths (think Mary of Bethany sitting at His feet, choosing the “better part”), healed them, and recognized their faith (like the persistent Canaanite woman). He entrusted them with profound moments – it was to women, including Mary Magdalene, that the resurrected Christ first appeared, commissioning them as the first witnesses to the most pivotal event in history!

Think of the diverse examples scripture gives us:

  • Mary, the mother of Jesus: Her humble surrender and strength (“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”)
  • Mary and Martha: Demonstrating both active service and devoted learning.
  • Lydia: A successful businesswoman whose open heart led to the founding of a church.
  • Priscilla: Who, alongside her husband Aquila, taught Apollos and helped lead the early church.
  • Phoebe: A deacon and benefactor commended by Paul for her significant service.

These women, and countless others unnamed, show us that following Jesus isn’t a monolithic experience. It involves service, learning, leadership, hospitality, proclamation, and deep, abiding faith.

What does this mean for women following Jesus today, right here in Phoenix or anywhere else in 2025?

It means your journey matters. Your unique God-given gifts, perspective, and voice are essential to the Body of Christ. Following Jesus isn’t confined to the walls of a church building; it happens in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and friendships. It looks like raising children in faith, leading with integrity in business, offering compassion to a hurting neighbor, creating art that reflects truth, studying Scripture diligently, or mentoring another woman.

The call to discipleship – to learn from Jesus, become like Him, and participate in His mission – is extended to all. Like the women who supported Jesus’ ministry financially, who stood by Him in His darkest hour when many fled, and who first declared “He is risen!”, women today are called to lives of profound faith and impact.

It’s a journey that requires leaning into God’s strength, seeking His wisdom through prayer and His Word, and crucially, connecting with other believers. Find your sisters in Christ, those who can encourage you, challenge you, pray with you, and walk alongside you, just as women have done since those first days walking the dusty roads of Galilee with Jesus.

Your story, your faith, your yes to following Him – it’s not a minor detail. It’s a vital thread in the ongoing, beautiful story of God’s redemptive work in the world. Embrace your calling, step out in faith, and know that you follow in the footsteps of remarkable women who showed the world what it means to love and serve Jesus.
