Prayer is one of the most personal, intimate ways we connect with our Heavenly Father. It’s where we bring our thanks, fears, questions, petitions, and praise. But if we’re not intentional with our prayer life, it can sometimes start to feel routine, reducing the rich blessings of our direct communication with God to perfunctory mealtime thanks and a quick check-in before bedtime. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Whether you’re new to praying or have been talking with God for decades, there’s always room to grow stronger in the spiritual discipline of prayer. Deepening your prayer life isn’t about saying fancier words or spending hours on your knees (unless you want to). It’s about moving from habit to relationship, from duty to joy. At Dream City Church, we want to help you grow closer to the Father in prayer. Here are five practical, grace-filled ways to deepen your prayer life starting today.

1. Start with Scripture

If you ever find yourself staring at the ceiling wondering what to pray, open your Bible. Praying God’s Word is a powerful way to realign your heart with His. The Psalms, in particular, are full of raw, honest prayers—joyful, sorrowful, angry, grateful. King David wasn’t shy about bringing his whole self before the Lord, and we don’t have to be either.

Try reading a passage slowly and turning it into a conversation with God. If you’re reading Psalm 23, pause and pray: “Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd. I don’t want to live in lack when You promise to provide.”

As it says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” When we pray God’s Word, we’re not just talking; we’re aligning with His truth.

2. Schedule Your Time with God

Relationships grow with the investment of time and care. We make time for what matters: coffee with friends, workouts, date nights, meetings (even ones we’d rather skip). Your time with God deserves a space on your calendar, too.

That doesn’t mean your prayers can’t be spontaneous; God loves those in-the-moment whispers. But carving out regular, focused time to be still before Him can change everything. Maybe it’s 10 quiet minutes before the kids wake up or a walk at lunch when you put in your noise-cancelling earbuds and just talk to Jesus. Make prayer a priority, and the spiritual blessings will spill over into everything else you do.

As James 4:8 promises, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence.

3. Embrace Silence and Listen

We often treat prayer like a one-way street. We talk. A lot. But part of deepening our prayer life is learning to listen. God is still speaking. Through His Spirit. Through His Word. Through a holy nudge you feel in your gut.

Try ending your prayer time with a few minutes of quiet. It might feel awkward at first. You might think of laundry or lunch. That’s okay. Stillness is a spiritual discipline. The more you practice, the more you begin to hear that “still small voice” Elijah heard on the mountain—not in the wind or fire, but in the quiet (1 Kings 19:12).

4. Fast and Pray

There’s something about fasting—sacrificing something physical to make room for the spiritual—that amplifies prayer. Whether we are skipping meals for a day or setting aside social media for a week, fasting reminds us how dependent we are on God.

Fasting isn’t about twisting God’s arm. It’s about uncluttering our hearts. When we fast, we quiet the noise and make space for deeper communion with Him. Jesus didn’t say “if” you fast; He said “when” (Matthew 6:16). That’s a pretty clear directive.

5. Be Honest and Specific

God isn’t looking for polished speeches from you. He already knows you. He wants your heart. Your honest, messy, not-sure-what-to-say heart. You don’t have to impress Him. Just talk to Him like you would to someone who loves you deeply, because He does!

Be specific. Pray for the friend who’s struggling, the big decision weighing on your mind, the gratitude you feel when your toddler finally naps. Nothing is too small for God. Or too big.

Remember what Philippians 4:6 says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Offer up your worries, hopes, and thanks without fear, because our Father in heaven can be trusted with all of it.

Your Prayer Life Can Grow Today

Parenting is a calling, but so is your marriage. Don’t wait for the kids to grow up to start investing in each other again. Love is forged in the small, faithful moments: the 5 a.m. coffee, the shared bedtime story, or the tender hug in the hallway while someone’s screaming in the other room.

Prayer isn’t a performance, but a relationship. It’s not about getting the words right. It’s about drawing close to the One who made you, who loves you, who listens.

If you’ve been feeling distant or distracted, look to your prayer life. It’s never too late to turn to God with your cares and weaknesses. He is always ready to meet you right where you are, exactly as you are.
