The mission of parenting our children is beautiful, rewarding, and a whole lot of a whole lot. There are bursts of joy, moments of worry, goldfish crackers everywhere, and a never-ending laundry pile that may or may not be developing sentience. And in the middle of it all is your marriage—the core relationship that was there before the bedtime battles and lunchbox negotiations began.

While it can be tempting to put your relationship on the back burner as you fight to survive those chaotic early childhood years, at Dream City Church, we believe marriage is a God-given covenant that is always worth investing in, especially when the parenting season is at its busiest. The truth is, your kids need you to prioritize each other. Strong marriages create safe homes. And while parenting can sometimes demand the lion’s share of your time and energy, your marriage deserves intentional care, too, not just whatever’s leftover when you’ve finally tucked your peanut-butter-covered offspring into bed for the night.

Here are five ways to stay connected in your marriage during the wild, wonderful season of parenting:

1. Keep Talking—About More Than the Kids

Communication doesn’t have to mean a 90-minute deep dive into your soul every night. But it does mean you should be carving out moments to connect beyond diaper duty and carpool schedules. Ask each other how your hearts are doing. What’s weighing heavily on your mind? What’s bringing you joy? Sometimes it might be a whispered prayer before collapsing into bed, or a 10-minute coffee chat while the kids are watching Bluey—but those check-ins matter.

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Your words carry weight. Use them to build up your relationship, not just to coordinate logistics.

2. Protect Couple Time Like It’s Sacred (Because It Is)

Date nights don’t have to be expensive or elaborate. A takeout picnic in the backyard. A movie after bedtime with popcorn and no phones. A walk around the block while your teenager watches the little ones. The point is to prioritize time alone together on a regular basis.

And don’t let guilt creep in. Investing in your marriage is not neglecting your kids; it’s providing them with the security of parents who like each other and want to stay together.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” Your marriage is a team. You’re still building something together, even in the chaos.

3. Laugh Together

Sometimes, humor is the glue that holds everything together. That inside joke about the toddler’s obsession with his socks? That look you give each other when the baby erupts like a volcano during dinner? Lean into those moments. Laughter breaks tension and reminds you that you’re in this together—not just as co-managers of a household, but as friends who love doing life together, even the messy parts.

4. Pray With and For Each Other

When the days feel long and the nights even longer, there is deep power in lifting each other up in prayer. Pray over your spouse’s stress, dreams, and struggles. Pray together when you can, even if it’s short and sleepy-eyed. When you’re both submitting your marriage to God and asking Him to guide your parenting, your connection grows stronger than anything the world—or a toddler tantrum—can throw at you.

5. Remember You’re Not Alone

Every parent feels like they’re drowning sometimes. Every couple hits dry spells. But the beauty of the Church—the real Church—is that we don’t do life in isolation. Surround yourselves with other couples who are in the trenches too. Join a Bible study. Get involved in a small group. Talk honestly with other believers. You don’t have to pretend everything’s perfect to belong here.

At Dream City Church, we offer classes and ministries designed to support marriages and families. We believe strong families grow from strong foundations, and our cornerstone is Christ.

Stay Rooted, Stay Together

Parenting is a calling, but so is your marriage. Don’t wait for the kids to grow up to start investing in each other again. Love is forged in the small, faithful moments: the 5 a.m. coffee, the shared bedtime story, or the tender hug in the hallway while someone’s screaming in the other room.

You don’t have to just survive this season. With God’s grace, you can thrive in it—together.
