Marriage is one of God’s most beautiful designs. It’s also one of the most refining. The one-ness of marriage is where faith gets tested, grace gets practiced, and love learns how to stretch and bend without breaking. As part of the Dream City Church family, we know that a strong marriage isn’t just about being emotionally connected. It’s about growing together in Christ, encouraging one another to become more like Him.
Supporting your spouse’s spiritual growth doesn’t mean turning into their personal Bible coach or keeping a checklist of their spiritual “progress.” It means choosing to love them daily in ways that gently and consistently point them back to Jesus. It’s not always flashy. Sometimes, it’s folding the laundry while they attend a Bible study. Sometimes, it’s holding hands during prayer, even if you argued an hour ago. But always, it’s about walking alongside them with intention, humility, and faith.
It Starts With Your Own Walk
It might seem counterintuitive, but the best way to support your spouse’s spiritual growth is to keep growing yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup—or an unopened Bible. Your commitment to prayer, scripture, worship, and obedience creates a spiritual atmosphere in your home that is a fertile ground for growth.
Jesus said it simply in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Your quiet consistency, your kindness, and your peace in the middle of chaos are all ways to shine your light. When you are sincerely practicing your faith day in and day out, your spouse will notice.
Encourage Without Pushing
No one blossoms under pressure. If your spouse is in a spiritually dry season, the last thing they need is a guilt trip or a 12-point sermon over breakfast. What they do need is encouragement rooted in love. A well-timed, “I’m praying for you today,” or “That message at church really made me think; what did you take away from it?” can open doors without making anyone feel pushed through them.
Remember 1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Think of encouragement as watering a seed, not demanding fruit before its time.
Pray Together, Even When It Feels Awkward
Yes, it might feel a little clumsy at first, especially if it’s not something you’re used to doing. But praying with your spouse, even for just a few minutes a day, brings spiritual intimacy that words can’t fully explain. You get to hear what’s on their heart. You learn how they see God, what they’re wrestling with, and what they’re thankful for. As you approach the throne of God together, disguises and emotional barriers fall away. It’s raw and real and sacred.
Don’t worry about sounding eloquent. God isn’t grading your grammar. He’s listening to your hearts. And the more you practice, the more natural it becomes.
Be Present for the Little Things
Not every spiritual moment looks like a mountaintop. Sometimes it’s watching your spouse underline a verse during Sunday’s message or sharing something they read in Scripture that hit them differently. These small moments are actually the building blocks of long-term growth.
Respond to them. Celebrate them. If your spouse mentions wanting to learn more about the Bible, help them find a class at Dream City. If they’re exploring a new area of ministry, cheer them on, even if it stretches your comfort zone a little.
Ephesians 4:2 reminds us: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Supporting spiritual growth takes patience, because growth doesn’t always follow our timelines or expectations. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes we take a step back for every two steps forward. But love bears with it cheerfully, humbly, and faithfully.
Grow Together, Not Just Side by Side
Growing together in faith as a married couple isn’t just traveling along on separate tracks that happen to run parallel. It’s actively finding those places where your spiritual lives intersect and investing your time and effort there. Serve together. Worship together. Study the Word together. Laugh together. These shared experiences deepen connection, not just to each other, but to God.
At Dream City Church, we believe in the power of spiritual community, especially within marriage. A DREAMarriage means staying together, but more than that, it means growing closer to Christ together. Our church offers resources, classes, and community groups where couples can build those roots deep and strong.
If your marriage feels a little spiritually off-track, you’re not alone, and you’re not too far gone. The same God who turns water into wine can revive a tired heart, renew faith, and reignite purpose.
