We may think we’re different from Cain and Abel, but the truth is that envy, injustice, quarreling, and rivalry are issues we all struggle with from the moment we first see another child pick up our favorite toy.
Conflict is a part of life, even for those who follow Christ. Miscommunication and arguments with family, friends, or coworkers can stir up our frustration, leaving us hurt and angry. Yet, as believers, we’re called to approach these moments with grace and humility, keeping our hearts aligned with Jesus.
At Dream City Church, we believe that handling conflict in a Christlike way not only strengthens our relationships but also visibly reflects God’s love to the world. Let’s explore how to navigate conflict biblically, with practical steps rooted in Scripture to guide us.
Seek Reconciliation Over Victory
When conflict arises, our human instinct often pushes us to prove we’re right or to “win” the argument. However, the Bible calls us to a higher standard. Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:23-24, “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” This verse reminds us that reconciliation takes precedence over even our worship. God values restored relationships over personal pride.
Before diving into a discussion you know will become heated, pause and pray. Ask God to soften your heart and guide your words. Approach the other person with a desire to understand their perspective, not to defeat them. It’s important to recognize that you are not facing an enemy, but another person who God loves, just as He loves you. This mindset shift sets the stage for healing and unity, reflecting Christ’s love in action.
Speak with Grace and Truth
Words have immense power, especially in tense situations. Ephesians 4:29 instructs, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” In conflict, it’s tempting to lash out or speak harshly, but your razor-sharp words can leave scars that last long after the argument is over. As followers of Jesus, we’re called to season our words with grace while still being honest.
Practically, this means listening actively before responding. Try to understand the other person’s feelings and perspective. When you speak, choose words that are kind yet truthful, avoiding accusations or assumptions. For example, instead of saying, “You always ignore me,” try, “I feel hurt when I don’t hear back from you.” This approach fosters understanding and keeps the conversation constructive. At Dream City Church, we encourage our community to build each other up, even in tough moments, so our words reflect the heart of Christ.
Take Responsibility and Forgive
Conflict often reveals areas where we’ve fallen short, whether through words, actions, or attitudes. Owning our part in a disagreement is a powerful step toward resolution. If you’ve wronged someone, humbly apologize and seek their forgiveness. If you’ve been hurt, choose to forgive, even if it’s difficult. Jesus modeled this on the cross, forgiving those who crucified Him. Forgiveness doesn’t mean ignoring the issue but releasing the burden of resentment so healing can begin.
Sometimes, resolving conflict requires a private conversation, as Jesus outlines in Matthew 18:15: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.” While it can be tempting to air your grievances to whoever will listen, that’s not the way God has instructed us to handle strife. Addressing issues directly and lovingly can prevent small misunderstandings from growing into bigger divides. If the situation escalates, seek wise counsel from a trusted friend, pastor, or mentor to guide the process biblically.
Trust God to Work in the Process
Not every conflict resolves neatly, and that’s okay. Our role is to be faithful in how we respond, trusting God to work in the other person’s heart and in the situation. Prayer is a powerful tool here, so pray for wisdom, patience, and peace. God can use conflict to refine our character, deepen our faith, and draw us closer to Him. At Dream City Church, we’ve seen God move in beautiful ways when people approach conflict with humility and trust in His plan.
Handling conflict in a Christlike way is hard, but as long as we are striving to show God’s love and grace, we don’t have to be perfect. Each step toward reconciliation, grace-filled communication, and forgiveness is a step toward living out the gospel. As we grow in this, we become a light to those around us, showing the world what it means to follow Jesus.
