As Ferris Bueller observed, life moves pretty fast these days, and, like many at Dream City Church, we sometimes find ourselves juggling work, family, and endless responsibilities in a way that drains our energy and dampens our mood. In the middle of it all, we can forget that true strength for our spiritual walk comes not from pushing harder, but from pausing to rest in the One who sustains us.

Rest is not a luxury or an afterthought in the Christian life. It is a practice rooted deeply in Scripture and modeled perfectly by Jesus Himself. When we make room for it, our souls find renewal, our faith grows deeper, and we become better equipped to live out the calling God has placed on our lives.

Jesus Modeled Rest for Us

Look at the way Jesus lived, and you see a beautiful rhythm of work and withdrawal. He often stepped away from the crowds to spend time in quiet places, connecting with His Father and drawing fresh strength for what lay ahead. After long days of teaching and healing, He would invite His closest followers to come away with Him to a solitary spot, where they could simply be together and recover. Even in the midst of a storm on the water, Jesus rested peacefully, showing that trust in God allows us to lay down our striving, despite whatever waves are crashing all around us.

This example from the Lord reminds us that rest refreshes every part of who we are. It clears our minds so we can think more wisely. It eases the weight of emotions that build up from constant demands. Our bodies recover, our relationships grow richer through unhurried moments, and we begin to notice God’s handiwork all around us in fresh ways. Most importantly, rest prepares us to serve others with genuine compassion instead of running on empty. At Dream City Church, we see this truth lived out week after week as people share how stepping back from busyness has opened their hearts to hear God more clearly.

What Scripture Says About Rest

The Bible speaks plainly about the gift of rest and calls us to receive it as part of our walk with Christ. One of the most comforting invitations comes from Jesus Himself in Matthew 11:28-30:

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

These words point us toward a rest that goes far beyond a good night’s sleep. It is soul-deep peace that comes when we release our heavy loads and learn to walk in step with the Lord. In Psalm 46:10 we are urged: “Be still and know that I am God.” In the quiet, we remember who He is and who we are in Him. Those who wait on the Lord will find new strength, soaring like eagles and moving forward without growing faint.

Rest is an act of faith. It declares that God is in control and that we do not have to carry everything alone. When we embrace Biblical rest, we step into the abundant life Jesus promised, free from the exhaustion that steals our joy and dulls our witness.

How Rest Strengthens Your Faith

Rest does more than recharge us physically. It builds our faith in ways we often do not expect. When we slow down and spend time in God’s presence, our minds and hearts realign with His truth. Worries lose their grip as we remember His promises. We trade anxiety for trust, just as Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet rather than rush around in constant activity.

This kind of rest also brings healing. It restores balance to our days, helps us see what truly matters, and draws us closer to the Lord in ways that busy schedules rarely allow. Gratitude flows more naturally when we are rested, turning everyday moments into worship. Rested, we are kinder, more thoughtful, and more focused on God’s will. Over time, this practice keeps us from burnout and equips us to bear fruit that lasts. Faith grows stronger because we have learned to depend on Christ moment by moment instead of relying on our own limited energy.

Putting Rest into Practice

Making rest part of your spiritual walk does not require a complete overhaul of your schedule. Start small and be intentional. Set aside time each day to be still before the Lord in prayer and Scripture. Make a habit of protecting one day a week for the Lord as he instructed, using it for worship, reflection, and simple joys that point you back to God. A walk in nature, a quiet conversation with a friend, or even turning off screens for an evening can open space for the Holy Spirit to refresh you.

At Dream City Church, we encourage one another to view rest as a holy discipline that honors God. Rather than doing nothing, we can choose activities that fill us up in Him. When we practice these moments of quiet contemplation consistently, we discover greater peace, clearer purpose, and a deeper love for the Savior who invites us to come and find rest. Amazingly, we also find that the chores and responsibilities we have do not become more crowded in or burdensome. Instead, we approach them with renewed energy and interest, able to handle them with the right perspective.

If you have been feeling weary in your spiritual walk, know that God has a better way. He longs to give you the renewal you need so you can run the race with endurance and joy.
