There’s something special about opening the Bible and realizing that the same words that shaped history, comforted generations, and revealed the heart of God to your forefathers are now right in front of you. When you first set out to study the Word in depth, though, it’s hard to know where to start. The Bible is alive with wisdom, yet without some guidance, it can feel like wandering through a dense forest without a map.

Thankfully, God doesn’t leave us stranded. His Word is meant to be understood, cherished, and lived out. If we seek Him, we will find Him. That is His promise to us. Here at Dream City Church, we encourage everyone to engage in regular Bible study. All the answers we seek are there if we just have the faith and discipline to look deeply.

Begin with Prayer and Expectation

Before diving into Scripture, take a moment to pray. Ask God to open your heart and mind to His truth. The Bible isn’t just another book; it’s God’s living Word, and His Spirit helps us grasp it. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Approaching your study with prayerful expectation is like turning on a lamp in a dark room; you’ll see things more clearly.

Choose a Passage, Not the Entire Book at Once

One reason many people feel overwhelmed is that they try to take on too much at once. Trying to study a whole book of the Bible in one session is like trying to eat a whole banquet in one bite! Instead, focus on a chapter, or even just a few verses. Slow down and give the text room to breathe. Read it over several times, taking time in between to ponder the meaning, both for the people who first received it and for you and me today. For example, spend a week with Psalm 23, meditating on what it means for the Lord to be your Shepherd in different areas of your life.

Ask Good Questions

Studying the Bible deeply means being curious. Ask yourself: Who wrote this passage, and why? What was happening at that time in history? What does this teach me about God’s character, and how does it point to Jesus? Writing your thoughts in a journal helps you keep track of what you’re learning and how it connects to your everyday life. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” That means the Bible isn’t passive and dry like a history textbook. Rather, it speaks to us where we are and actively shapes us when we engage with it.

Compare and Connect

Scripture interprets Scripture. If you’re studying a passage in the New Testament, look for Old Testament connections, and vice versa. You might be surprised at how often the themes of grace, mercy, and redemption are woven throughout the whole Bible. Using a study Bible, a trusted commentary, or even the cross-reference notes at the bottom of your page can open up layers of meaning you might otherwise miss. Don’t be afraid to go down a rabbit hole when you discover a new question or thought. It might be the Spirit leading you to a deeper understanding you need in order to grow in your faith.

Live It Out

The goal of Bible study isn’t just information; it’s transformation. In James 1:23-24, Scripture tells us that only reading or listening to God’s word without putting it into practice is like looking at yourself in a mirror, fixing nothing, and then walking away and completely forgetting what you saw. The broccoli is still in your teeth, and your hair still sticks out over your ear, so what good was looking in the mirror?

As Jesus said in John 13:17, “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” The blessing comes in applying what you’ve learned. If you study a passage about forgiveness, think of someone you need to forgive. If you’re reading about generosity, consider how you might give more freely. The Word takes root when it moves from the page into practice.

Study with Others

While personal study is powerful, gathering with others and talking over the Word together adds richness. Join a Bible class, attend a small group, or simply study alongside a friend. God often speaks through the insights of fellow believers, and the encouragement of community keeps us steady when life gets busy.

At Dream City Church, we believe that studying the Bible is one of the most rewarding journeys you can take. It brings you closer to God, equips you to face life’s challenges, and deepens your faith in ways nothing else can.
