Welcome to day one of our special Passion Week series, “The Week That Changed the World.” Throughout this week, Pastor Adam Ranney is sitting down with different pastors to walk through the journey to the Cross, exploring the sights, sounds, and profound spiritual significance of Jesus’ final days on earth.
In our opening episode, Pastor Todd Matchett joins Pastor Adam to discuss the events of Holy Monday—specifically, the moment Jesus cleansed the Temple.
Reclaiming Sacred Space
We often think of the cleansing of the Temple as a singular “holy fit,” but as Pastor Todd points out, this was actually the second time Jesus performed this act during His ministry. It serves as a powerful reminder that keeping our “temples”—our hearts, our schedules, and our priorities—aligned with God is not a one-time event, but an ongoing, intentional practice.
Moving Beyond “The Common”
Over time, the sacred space of the Temple had become cluttered with the “common”—the noise of money changing, livestock, and everyday commerce. Pastor Todd and Pastor Adam discuss how easily our own lives can become crowded with distractions that prevent us from truly practicing the presence of God.
When our lives are too full of the mundane, we leave little room for the miraculous. In the Gospel of Matthew, it is noted that only after Jesus cleared the Temple was there room for the blind and the lame to come to Him for healing. When we remove what doesn’t belong, we create the space necessary for God to move in power.
A Heart for People
At its core, Jesus’ act of authority was an act of love. He was reclaiming space for those who needed God most: the broken, the hurting, and the lost. As we begin this Holy Week, let us ask ourselves: Is there room in my life for what matters most to God?
