Every life brings pain: unexpected losses, broken relationships, shattered dreams, illness, injury, betrayal, disappointment. Faithful followers of Christ are not immune to suffering; on the contrary, sometimes God seems to give them more than their fair share.
The Bible never promises a life free from trials, even if you spend every waking moment doing what God wants. Christ’s life shows us that quite clearly. Your life is not a “deal” you make with God, in which he promises you earthly comfort and ease for following His rules. Instead, God offers something far more powerful: the assurance that He will redeem every hardship you experience and use it for His glory and your good.
At Dream City Church, we believe no physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual pain is ever wasted in the hands of a loving God. God is working through every season of struggle: shaping, strengthening, and preparing us for a greater purpose.
Suffering Is Part of the Journey
In John 16:33, Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” These words don’t ignore pain; they frankly acknowledge it. The Christian life doesn’t exempt us from hardship; it equips us to walk through it with hope, determination, and conviction.
From the stories of Joseph in prison and David in exile to Job in loss and Paul in chains, Scripture is filled with men and women who experienced great suffering (often much more than we will face in our lifetimes), yet found that God was present in all of it. Their trials were not the end of their story; those trials set them on the path toward fulfilling God’s will for them.
Pain Prepares and Refines
Romans 5:3-4 reminds us, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” In God’s economy, pain is never pointless. When we go through struggles, God uses them to refine our hearts, clearly showing us our dependence on Him. Suffering often strips away the illusions of control and self-sufficiency, pushing us closer to the only trustworthy source of strength: Christ.
Trials can purify our faith and prepare us for the purpose God has designed. The struggle that threatens to break us can become the very thing God uses to build us.
Pain Brings Us Closer to Others
When we’ve walked through pain, we also gain compassion and empathy for those who are hurting. Our personal experiences can become powerful testimonies that point others to God’s faithfulness. And when God sends us consolation, He doesn’t do it just for our sakes; He does it so we can comfort others. Your story of healing, survival, and faith in the fire may be exactly what someone else needs to hear to find hope.
God brings beauty from ashes. He can use what was meant for evil and use it for good (Genesis 50:20). He turns mourning into dancing (Psalm 30:11). He transforms the broken into something breathtaking. When we trust God with our pain, we become living testimonies of His redemptive power. The world sees His strength made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). What once was a wound becomes a window through which others can see God’s glory.
Purpose Beyond the Pain
Whatever pain you are walking through today, know this: God is not finished. The same hands that formed you are faithfully holding your story. And He is weaving every thread—joyful and sorrowful—into a greater purpose than you can imagine. That doesn’t necessarily mean you will defeat giants or bring down the walls of God’s enemies. If God’s purpose is for you to bring just one lost soul into God’s Kingdom, trust that that soul is infinitely precious to God.
At Dream City Church, we’ve seen countless lives transformed—not in spite of pain, but because of it. God has a way of taking what the enemy meant for harm and using it to bring healing, salvation, and purpose to others.
Pain is real. But so is God’s purpose. He is not a distant observer of your suffering—He is a present Redeemer, working all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
If you’re in a season of struggle, take heart. Your story is not over. And in God’s hands, your pain can become the platform He uses to display His glory and fulfill your calling.
