We recently wrapped up an impactful eight weeks at Dream City Church with our “Next 10: Decade of Destiny” series. If you’ve been following along, you know this hasn’t just been another sermon series. It has been a call to action—a wake-up call to stop living life by drift and start living life by destiny.

We have already seen the fruit of this message. We’ve heard stories of people changing jobs, starting new businesses, and making massive life decisions because they realized they were created for a purpose. They decided that when they reach the end of their lives, they want to know they left a mark.

But what does leaving a mark really look like?

The True Definition of Legacy

During a recent service, we honored the “builders” of our community—the men and women who sacrificed their time, money, and energy to build the church and ministries that serve our city today. Watching them on stage, it was impossible not to feel the weight of their influence. They didn’t just build buildings; they built a foundation for the future.

This brings us to a critical distinction about legacy. Our culture often gets this wrong. The world measures legacy by what we leave for people—possessions, titles, inheritances, and achievements.

However, true spiritual legacy isn’t about what you leave for people; it is about what you leave in people.

It is the faith, character, and values you pass down. As the book of Proverbs reminds us, the righteous lead blameless lives, and their children are blessed after them. There is a powerful connection between a life of integrity lived today and the blessings that follow tomorrow.

The Ripple Effect of Your Choices

It’s easy to think that our daily routine doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of eternity. You get up, drink your coffee, go to work, and come home. But the choices you make in those mundane moments are rippling through generations.

When you choose to walk in righteousness today, you are planting seeds of faith that will outlive you.

I am a product of this kind of legacy. I had obedient great-grandparents who loved Jesus. They passed that love down to my grandparents, who passed it to my parents, who passed it to me. Now, I have the privilege of passing that same faith to my children and grandchildren.

This chain of faith didn’t happen by accident. It happened because generation after generation made a conscious decision to model values that point to Jesus. Your obedience today is the ink writing the story for the generations to come.

Building on the Mundane

We often wait for a “big moment” to make our mark, but legacy isn’t built in a single moment. It is built in the mundane.

  • It is the daily decision to love when it’s hard.

  • It is the choice to forgive when you’ve been wronged.

  • It is the act of serving when no one is watching.

  • It is every word of encouragement you speak.

Each of these actions is a brick in the spiritual house you are leaving behind for others to dwell in. You may never see the full impact of your legacy in your lifetime, and that is okay. God sees it. He is a generational God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He thinks in terms of lineage and long-term impact.

A Challenge for Today

As you go about your week, I want to challenge you to ask yourself two questions:

  1. What values am I modeling for my family, friends, and community?

  2. Am I living in a way that points others to Jesus?

Let’s choose to live with eternity in mind. Let’s embody the spirit of Psalm 78:4, which declares, “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.”

Don’t wait for the perfect time. Start now. Start today. Live your life on purpose, and leave a legacy of faith that will bless generations to come.
