Have you ever dismissed the idea of a “God-given calling” as something reserved only for missionaries and pastors? If so, you’re not alone. We often think of it as this grand, exclusive spiritual assignment, but the powerful truth is: the call of God is on all of us. You are not an accident. You were made by God and for God, for a purpose. And until you understand that, life simply won’t make sense.

Pastor Dave Ansell, in a recent devotion, unpacks this concept beautifully, drawing inspiration from the courageous Queen Esther. Esther didn’t just stumble into her destiny; she intentionally sought God’s will through fasting and prayer. We are encouraged to do the same to gain clarity in our own lives.

The Bible tells us that before you were even born, God planned what He wanted to do with your life. This isn’t just about your job title; it’s an assignment from God. You could be a banker, an Uber driver, a teacher, or a homemaker—whatever your occupation, the ultimate calling is the same: to love God and to make Him known.

The Three Dimensions of Your Calling

To make this idea less abstract, Pastor Ansell breaks down our calling into three practical, interconnected areas:

  1. A Calling to Live for God (Character): This is the general calling on all our lives. It’s about how we live. As followers of Christ, as husbands, wives, parents, or leaders, we are called to be people of character, living according to God’s ways.
  2. A Calling to Work for God (Vocation): This is what you do for a living. It’s about honoring God through your work, not just after your work is done. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” You are to be salt and light in your workplace.
  3. A Calling to Advance the Work of God (Ministry/Generosity): This involves serving in your local church and community, using your gifts to advance God’s Kingdom. You are invaluable and one-of-a-kind. God needs your unique contribution.
What’s Your “For Such a Time as This”?

Just like Mordecai told Esther, you have been placed where you are “for such a time as this.”

If your calling feels unclear, follow Esther’s advice: Take a few days to pray and fast (even just a meal or two) and intentionally ask God for clarity. Tune into your spiritual hearing, because God has an anointing—the power, insight, and energy—to empower you for what He has called you to do.

You are a difference-maker. Your life has profound purpose. Are you ready to step into the assignment God has for you today?
